Biography:

LIBBY PATAKI

First Lady of the State of New York

For more than 15 years, Libby Pataki has actively worked alongside her husband, Governor George E. Pataki, to raise awareness for a host of issues crucial to families, children and women's health. Her motto, "never wait for your ship to come in; row out to meet it" truly describes her approach to life.

One of the closest issues to the First Lady's heart is the prevention and detection of breast cancer. She has lost two aunts and a grandmother to the dreaded disease, and her mother is currently being treated. Turning her moving personal experiences into positive action, Mrs. Pataki has traveled New York State working with breast cancer advocates to increase public awareness. She championed the passage of New York's Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1997, and proclaimed October 19, New York State Mammography Day. Her work has earned her several distinguished service awards from the American Cancer Society and other advocacy groups. As First Lady, Mrs. Pataki has also continued her work as an advocate for victims of domestic violence. Having worked with the Northern Westchester Center for Abused Women in the 1970's, Mrs. Pataki is a long-time activist in the battle against this international epidemic.

Addressing these and other issues at the lecture podium, Mrs. Pataki shares both revealing statistical background and moving personal insights from her own experiences. An eloquent and witty speaker who has addressed hundreds of audiences, she delivers the important, heart-felt message that awareness and action can have a positive impact on our own lives and the world around us.
