George Foreman, one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time, is two-time
World Boxing Champion, 1968 Olympic Gold Medal winner in Boxing and was named
to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. Now involved in many other
aspects of his life, he is an ordained minister, a business man, a family man
and a rancher.
After winning the Olympic gold in 1968, Foreman faced Joe Frasier on January
22, 1973 for the heavyweight title. He knocked Frasier to the canvas six times
before a second round knockout which earned him the Heavyweight Championship of
the World.
October 30, 1974 - Foreman was challenged by Muhammad Ali in a bout tagged
"The Rumble in the Jungle". He lost the first bout of his professional career.
January 24, 1976 - Foreman defeated Ron Lyle in his first serious bout since
losing the title to Ali in 1974. This was one of the most exciting bouts of his
career. Both fighters were knocked to the canvas twice, but Foreman was
victorious in the fourth round kayo.
June 15, 1976 - Foreman had a rematch with Joe Fraiser. Foreman defeated
"Smokin Joe" once more in the fifth round. Since the "Smokin Joe" rematch,
Foreman had a series of four consecutive KO's, and was on the edge of getting
another title shot, when he was defeated by Jimmy Young in San Juan, Puerto
Rico on March 17, 1977. It was to be his last fight for 10 years. Forman became
a minister and began to preach.
January 15, 1987 - Foreman challenged Jerry Cooney in a bout better known as
"The Preacher and the Puncher". In this bout, Foreman sent Cooney to the canvas
twice in the second round before finishing with a powerful right cross at 1:57
of the second round.
March 9, 1987 - After a 10 year absence from the ring, Foreman began his
comeback by defeating Steve Louski in the fourth round.
June 16, 1990 - Foreman faced Adilson Rodriguez, his first ranked contender
since his comeback. He defeated the Brazilian slugger with a left hook in round
two. This bout erased doubt in the minds of many Foreman's critics.
April 19, 1991 - Foreman faced Evander Holyfield for the Heavyweight
Championship of The World. This bout will go down in history as one of the
greatest championship bouts of all time. The bout was coined "The Battle of the
Ages." Although Foreman did not regain the title, he came out a winner. He
proved to everyone of all ages that one should never give up no matter what
age. He turned his critics into fans and made his fans more loyal than ever.
November 5, 1994 - George faced Michael Moorer for the heavy weight title.
In this historical moment, he knocked out Moorer in the 10th round to become
The Heavy Weight Champion of the World! This win earned him many spots in the
history books.
George Foreman is very active in the community. He operates a youth center
in Houston, Texas designed to keep kids off the streets. He currently has a
professional record of 73-4, 53 KO's. His autobiography is entitled, "By
George".
